Article Processing Charges (APC)
Science
Open Access publishing ensures that research is freely accessible to readers worldwide. To sustain this model, journals implement Article Processing Charges (APCs), which cover the services required to bring a manuscript from acceptance to publication. These charges support editorial management, production, formatting, dissemination, and archiving, allowing readers to access content without paywalls.
Importantly, peer review is entirely free; authors do not pay any fees for the review process itself. APCs are applied only after a manuscript is accepted and do not influence editorial decisions. Instead, they enable journals to maintain rigorous standards and a reliable publication workflow while providing broad and immediate access to scholarly work.
APCs
- For the entire Science Series, covering all disciplines and sections, there is a single APC of £500 for standard Open Access publication.
- Authors may choose fast-track publication at £600, which accelerates the production process within the standard Open Access framework.
For both standard and fast-track articles, authors do not receive royalties, as the content is freely available to readers.
For Special Issues, an APC of £700 applies. Unlike standard open access articles, Special Issue publications allow authors to receive royalties, calculated based on the average author royalty in academic publishing, typically 15% of net revenues generated by the article.
This structure ensures transparency and simplicity, with predictable fees for standard and fast-track publications, while providing additional incentives for Special Issue contributions.

Manuscripts should be submitted in a carefully prepared form, with clear academic English and well-constructed figures. Particular attention should be given to language accuracy, coherence of argument, and visual clarity, as these elements play a decisive role in both peer review and production. Authors are expected to address all necessary revisions—especially those arising from reviewer feedback—prior to final acceptance. Failure to do so may lead to delays in publication or, in some cases, withdrawal from the editorial process.
Recognising that not all contributors have access to professional editing support, we actively aim to facilitate the preparation process and reduce avoidable obstacles. For this reason, we provide dedicated assistance through our Author Services page, where tailored support is available for language refinement and academic proofreading (covering not only linguistic accuracy, but also clarity of expression, coherence of argument, and alignment with scholarly conventions). These optional services are designed to help ensure that submissions meet the required academic and technical standards from the outset.
Certain authors may benefit from APC reductions or institutional support. Discounts may apply to members of affiliated academic societies, as well as to researchers whose institutions participate in Open Access support programmes or agreements.
Authors are also encouraged to consult their funding bodies or institutional policies, as many research grants explicitly allow the use of allocated funds to cover publication costs associated with Open Access, including APCs.
